TitleRotherham County Borough Police
DescriptionThe first part of the collection were acquired directly from Rotherham Police before the force amalgamated with the Sheffield City Police Force in 1967, and chiefly covers the appointment of officers to the Rotherham Police Constabulary and their subsequent conduct (See 15-C/1, Appointment & Conduct of Police Officers, 1 May 1882-13 Dec 1940). There is also a substantial record of Chief Constable's and Inspector's memoranda, issued to police officers (See 15-C/2, Memoranda Books, 16 May 1913-19 Nov 1947). In addition, the archives contain details of known ex-convicts in the Rotherham area, which give a brief profile of each individual (See 15-C/3, Police Supervision Register, 1 Mar 1878-3 Dec 1914), and papers regarding the amalgamation of the Rotherham Police with Sheffield City Police Force (See 15-C/4, Jan-Apr 1967). Other material, which kept at the Police Station on Howard Street but was not produced by Rotherham Police, includes the Rotherham Parish Constables' Accounts (See 15-C/6-7, 29 Oct 1763-2 Mar 1796, and 12 Jun 1830-12 May 1842), and a bank pass book from the British Union of Fascists (Districts) Ltd, Rotherham District (See 15-C/5, 6 Aug 1936-7 Feb 1940), which could possibly have been retained by the police as an item of evidence in an investigation by Rotherham Police.

The second part of the collection includes additional records of Rotherham County Borough Police, which were previously acquired and held by South Yorkshire Archive Service before being transferred to Rotherham Archives via Sheffield City Archives (See 15-C/8). It includes circular memos, general orders and memorandums (See 15-C/8/1), officer conduct and disciplinary report books (See 15-C/8/2), officer diaries, pocket books and other records kept by individual police offciers who worked for Rotherham County Borough Police (See 15-C/8/3), registers of charges, registers of criminals with mugshots and occurances registers (See 15-C/8/4), magistrates court registers and inguest book formerly kept at Rotherham Police Station (See 15-C/8/5) and records concerning civil defence and Air Raid Precautions also formerly kept at Rotherham Police Station (See 15-C/8/6).
