Horace Hepworth was born in Mexborough in 1896. His parents were John Cobb Hepworth and Mary-Ellen Hepworth. Horace enlisted at the age of 17 on 18 November 1914. He was assigned to the 11th Battalion and was sent to fight in France in September 1915. He was then transferred to the 6th Battalion, with whom he served in Egypt and then France. Later he was attached to the 8th and then 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. On 1 September 1917, he married Hannah Taylor of Mexborough. He was captured as a Prisoner of War and later died of his wounds at the age of 21 on 13 June 1918. |
