DescriptionDigital scans of documents and photographs of Leslie Roth, Private and then later Corporal of the 16th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, who served during the First World War. Includes his certificate of employment, identity papers, daily timesheet, demobilisation certificate, demobilisation account, out of work donation policy form, a circular notice from the Jewish War Services Committee concerning leave for Jewish men to celebrate Passover and other various blank forms, as well as personal documents, notably a birthday scroll with message signed by his comrades, handwritten list of men he served with, and a handwritten letter from a friend 'Peter', as well as four photographs of him in uniform and with other soldiers of the 16th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment.

Leslie Roth, born Lazarus Roth to a Jewish family in Whitechapel on 7 August 1896. His parents were Harris and Fanny Roth (nee Schier). They were both born in Kalisz, Poland/Russia but were married at East London Synagogue, Mile End Old Town on 20 June 1894. Leslie married Golda Rosen at Devonshire Hall, Hackney on 30 March 1921. He served in the 16th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment with his brother, Jack (Jacob) Roth and their uncle, Abraham Roth. Abraham Roth was born in Poland but had naturalised in South Africa and later naturalised in UK, whilst still serving in the York and Lancaster Regiment. Leslie Roth died in Chadwell Heath Hospital, Redbridge 4 February 1976.
