| Description | Includes two pocketbooks containing photographic negatives taken by Captain Charles Frederick Lawson of 6th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment relating to his time serving in the North African Campaign and then the Italian Campaign during the Second World War (1943-1945). The photographs show various family members, as well as his celebrating victory after the Battle of Sedjenane with fellow soldiers in Tunisa, the Capri Harbour, and drinking gin in a square in Capri, camels, pyramids and mosques in Cairo, Egypt, sightseeing in Palestine and Jerusalem, and the places he visited in Syria and then Italy, including a trip with other officers to Rome. Accompanied by print out of information on his service and career after the war, compiled by his son, Graham Lawson (2022).
Captain Charles Frederick Lawson was born on 23 September 1918 and married Iris Bessie Hill on 14 December 1939. He enlisted with the 9th Battalion Scottish Rifles in 1939 and went on to be commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the 6th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment in 1941 and served in Tunisia from March 1943. He became Captain in July 1943 and was then sent to Capri towards the end of 1943. He fought in the Italian Campaign from 1943 to 1945. In June 1945, he became an Acting Major. After the war, he worked as Foundry Manager at Buckley and Taylor Ltd, Oldham in 1948. |
