DescriptionPre-nuptial agreement and marriage settlement of Edmond Mountforth & Elizabeth Calverley.
A
(1) Thomas Calu[er]ley of Eccleshill, esquire
(2) John Mountford of Kilnehirst gentleman
Agreement that Edmond Mountford, son & heir of (2) will marry Elizabeth, (1)'s daughter,before the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist [24th June] next. Before this date (2) will grant to William Calu[er]ley, esquire, Walter Baildon, Thomas Wilcok, parson of Rawmershe & William Gurry junior lands to the value of £6, 4 marks a year to be used by (1) for the maintenance of Edmond & Elizabeth until Edmond is 20. If (2) dies before that (1) shall have the balance of £6. When Edmond reaches 20 the feoffees are to grant him 4 marks a year if (2) is still alive; if dead to grant 6 marks. If Edmond & Elizabeth die without heirs, the income will revert to the right heirs of (2).
After (2)'s death, Edmond will inherit all his manors &c excepting the dower of (2)'s wife Isabel.
(1) to pay (2) 50 marks: £20 on the day of the marriage & 10 marks one year later & 10 marks another year later.
(1) to have the 'Gou[er]nance, reule & Gydyng' of Edmond & Elizabeth until Edmond is 20. If Elizabeth dies within two years any payments due to be void. If Edmond dies without having 'Carnall Knawlege' of Elizabeth, then Thomas, (2)'s younger son will marry her.
(2) bound in 100 marks.

With John Mountford's receipt for £20 paid by Thomas Calu[er]ley on the day of their children's marriage, the day after the feast of Holy Trinity 6 Henry VII [30th May 1491]. Dated 30th May 6 Henry VII

(1) William Calu[er]ley, Walter Baildon, John Serleby, Thomas Wilcok[es], clerk
(2) Edmund Mounforth, son & heir of John Mounforth of Kilnehirst & Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Thomas Calu[er]ley, esquire.
(1) to (2) & the heirs of their bodies: all lands & tenements in Kilnehirst: a close called le Fersepen, a close called le Nerspen, a piece of meadow containing 5 rods & a close called le Wolfyng; a close called le Brodyng, a close called Northyng, a piece of land called le Longpikyll; a piece of land called Calsefall. If (2) die without heirs, reversion to the right heirs of John Mountforth .
(1) make Edmund Archer & John Sels [?] their attornies to act in the matter.
