Title'On the Somme' German album of printed images
DescriptionTwo hundred and nineteen images, all captioned in German and annotated in pen with English translations. Covers and title page are missing; pages are loose. First section: trenches, dug outs, ruined buildings, displaced civilians, staff quarters, churches, cemeteries, shops, town squares in Peronne, Hardecourt, Clery, Maurepas, Combles, Montauban, Mametz, Bazentin and Longueval. Second section called 'From before and behind the Front': construction of trenches, bringing up rations, soldiers bathing, farming scenes, bakery, canteen, transport for the wounded. Third section called 'In and around Bapaume': prominent buildings, after the battle, fire shells falling, shot down plane, bivouacs, prisoners from the Somme. Fourth section called: 'South of Arras': buildings, trenches, cemeteries, churches, flame thrower. Fifth section called 'On the banks of the Ancre': infantry resting, scenes of Miraumont and Beaumont, wounded transport, dressing station, prisoners. Final page contains a list of Offiers and Army units that contributed photographs for the book.
