| Description | Part I describes the formation of the Battalion at the Gandale camp site, near Catterick in May 1940; the subsequent training, encampments and movements before arriving in Bombay in Sep 1942; and the jungle training and exercises preceeding the move to the Arakan, Burma. Part II by Lt. Col. F.J.C. Piggott describes the activities of the Battalion in the Arakan campaign from Dec 1944-Dec1945 in detail. Part III describes the final months in the Arakan and the dispersal of the men to India and postings to the 2nd Battalion when the 9th was disbanded. Appendix I is a roll of honour for men lost and missing in the Battalion's Arakan campaign and appendix II lists the honours, awards and mentions in despatches gained. All are bound into a folder decorated by hand with a drawing of the Regiment's badge. Attached inside the front cover is a photograph of Gen. Franklin G.O.C. in Command Northern Ireland, Bainbridge, Col. Blad and Capt. Philpot Green. Attached to the back cover is photocopy of the order of service for the unveiling and dedication on 27 Mar 1945 of the memorial erected by the 9th Battalion for their comrades who died in the Arakan, and a roll of honour. |
