Description | This collection comprises the records of the Rotherham Poor Law Union. Formed in 1837, under the Poor Law Amendment Act, 1834, the workhouse was erected in Moorgate, Rotherham in 1838 and considerable enlarged in 1894. From 1929 the workhouse became the Public Assistance Institution, administered by the Borough Council, while the infirmary eventually became the core of Rotherham Moorgate Hospital. The collection comprises minutes of the meetings of the Board of Guardians, volumes related to the running of the workhouse, and records of the inmates, managed by Rotherham Poor Law Union. |
