TitleTransport
DescriptionThe Transport Department was created in 1900, as a result of the Corporation's proposals to develop a municipal tramway. The first tramcar service was introduced in January 1903 and ran along Effingham Street from College Street to Howard Street. Further services were introduced during the course of the year. In 1911, the Corporation began to operate trolley bus and motor omnibus services. Motor bus services grew rapidly after the First World War, and from 1929 the tramways were gradually replaced. The usage of the Corporation's public transport facilities began to decline from around 1952 as car ownership increased, so that the number of passengers carried by the Council decreased from 64,165,548 in 1952, to 402,949 in 1961.
