Name derives from Old English "ule leah" (a forest glade frequented by owls). Appears in Domesday Book as "Ollei" - then part of estate of Count of Mortain (half-brother of William the Conqueror).
Ulley was partly in the parishes of Aston and Treeton.
Viscount Halifax was lord of the manor and among the chief landowners.
