No. 4 shaft was sunk between 1937 and 1939. There is no record of Nos 1, 2 and 3 shafts being sunk but would estimate first shaft between 1850 and 1858
Ventilation
Up to 1885 the colliery was furnace ventilated and was then ventilated by a Goiball Fan till 1941. From 1931 to 1952 ventilation was by a steam driven Steart Walker Fan which was converted to electricity in 1952.
A strike at the beginning of the century lasted three years and was known as the riddle strike. This was the strike when the black legs were transported by rail into the Colliery sidings.
In 1860, six men were killed when flung out of the cage when the wooden side support snapped.
In 1936, three men were killed by an outburst of gas in the Silkstone Seam
In 1937, one man was killed and 21 seriously injured by the cage being overwound
Transport
Coal ceased to be transported by barge in 1934
The coal worked at the colliery was mainly owned by three families - the Fitzwilliams, Fullertons and Foljambes
