Place EntryRavenfield Hall/Ravenfield Park/Ravenfield/South Yorkshire
NotesThere is a description of the Hall in "Pavener's West Riding of Yorkshire Riding", which gives no indication of the date of the building. It is possible that it was built during the period 1750-1756 as, according to Hunter "The present elegant mansion has been erected since the purchase from the Westby, Carr of York was the architect". The old hall was puchased from the Westbys in 1749 by a Mrs Elizabeth Parkin, a maiden lady, who was instrumental in rebuilding the Church from a design of Carr's which was opened in 1756. Perhaps one could assume that the Hall was re-built in the same period. It is listed as undated in Calvin's "Biographical dictionary of English Architects 1660-1840".

Mrs Parkin died unmarried in 1756 when the estate was left to her cousin, Walter Oborne, who lived there. On his death in 1778, Ravenfield descended to Matthew Worgan of Wolley near Bath, another cousin of Mrs Elizabeth Parkin. Mr. Worgan resided little at Ravenfield and died unmarried about 1788, when an entail created by the original purchaser took effect in favour of a very distant relative, William Parkin Bosville. He made Ravenfield his residence and on his death in 1811 his brother Thomas Bosvile succeeded, and on his death, unmarried. Ravenfield passed to Thomas James Birch of Thorpe Hall, co. Lincoln, Major and Lieut. Col. in 1st Regiment of Guards, only child of Thomas Birch, son of James Birch, of Coventry and Thorpe Hall, and Margaret Bosvile, sister to the mother of William Parkin and Thomas Boxvile. Colonel Birch, by royal sign manual, dated 22nd May 1824, took the name Bosvile.

These details are taken from "Hunter's "South Yorkshire". The first directory we have which gives an occupant for the Hall is 1833, when a Thomas Walker is listed at Ravenfield Park ( a name which is used in all the directory entries found). Between 1849 and 1868, Thomas Bosvile is given as the occupier, and from 1871-1891 Henry Elliott Hoole and William Wright Hoole are listed as living there whilst a note appears to the effect that the Hall is the property of Thomas Rolle bosvile of the Grove, Basingstoke, Hants. Unfortunately Ravenfield does not appear in the directories which we have after 1891. The only place it appears is in a West Riding directory for 1936 when a J. D. Badger is listed as being a farmer of Ravenfield Hall Farm, by which name it is now known.(From letter from P. B. Littlewood 29th March 1967)

Reply received from Gordon Smith 2nd April 1967 saying that the Hall was demolished 2 years previously. the present owner (Mr. Robert Heath) had some very good photographs
