TitleThe York and Lancaster Regiment
DescriptionThe archive collection of the York and Lancaster Regiment covers the 210 year history of the Regiment and its predecessors (1758-1968). The material was either created or used by the Regiment, or collected by members of the Regiment in the course of their military service, or saved by the family members of those on active service. There are also later items dating up to 2016, such as newspaper articles featuring former members of the Regiment and information on reunions or commemorative events.

Both the operational and administrative functions of the Regiment are well-represented amongst the records. The collection contains operation orders, plans, trench maps and instructions for a variety of military engagements, in addition to digests of service, war diaries for some battalions, reports and narrative accounts of the various actions. Standing orders and administrative records relating to the management of personnel, transport, buildings, equipment and supplies are also included.

Other records such as recruitment and training materials, publications, war-themed material and the large quantity of photographs illustrate the lifestyle, daily activities and interests of individual soldiers. This is complemented by over 900 sets of soldiers' personal papers that include a mixture of letters, postcards, photographs, ephemera, Army papers and other personal or official documents.
