DescriptionOfficial directories of Officers in the British Army, with different formats and content depending on which of the following series of Army List the book comes from:
Army Lists, published annually, those dated 1754-1879 are arranged by regiment and list the regular Army only.
Monthly Army Lists (1798-1940, but not titled 'Monthly' until 1882) are arranged by regiment and include regular, colonial, militia and territorial units. They also provide some details of a regiment's location.
Quarterly Army Lists (first series 1879-1922) list the regular Army only and, until 1907, contain a regimental list. They also include a gradation list of Officers in order of seniority, with dates of birth and promotions, and from April 1881, contains Officers' war service (in January issue only, 1909-1922). Half-Yearly Army Lists (1923-1950) list the Officers in order of seniority (regular Army only), and the January issues include retired Officers. These were issued annually from February 1947.
Quarterly Army Lists (second series 1940-1950) include regular, colonial, militia and territorial units and replaced Monthly Army Lists from July 1940. They were produced monthly or bi-monthly until December 1943; quarterly until April 1947; and then three times per year.
Modern Army Lists, from 1951 onwards include the regular Army only and consist of three parts: Part 1 is a list of serving Officers; Part II lists Officers in receipt of retired pay; Part III is the gradation list (brief biography of Officers).
E-Army Lists, issued from 2006, are as above but on CD-Roms.
